Onzie Sample Sale

Onzie SS

Sample sale alert! I am as addicted to cute workout clothes as I am to Class Pass, so naturally I like to be on the pulse of cute athletic apparel sample sales. I’ll be sharing them here and on Instagram and Twitter with you as I hear about them.

This Saturday, August 1, Onzie will be having a sample sale at Trim Hair Salon (1424 Abbot Kinney Blvd) in Venice! They will have new bra tops, leggings, tanks and one pieces with prices start at $15! Cash only and all sales are final. The first 50 customers will receive a free Onzie tote bag.

Onzie was originally designed for hot yoga but has evolved to include spin crops and gear for other types of workouts. They’re known for their cute bra tops and crazy prints. A couple of my faves include their Chevron Track Leggings (they’re long but feel very light!) and their criss cross back bras. They also make a look-alike of the popular Lululemon Free To Be Wild Bra, which is called the Chic Bra in the Onzie line. In addition, they have a popular and cute cage back bra, but just be aware that it’s not as supportive as some of the other bras.

Get familiar with some of their styles on their site before hitting up the sale on Sat!

Bangin’ Body Boot Camp w/ JJ Dancer

JJ Dancer

Class: Bangin Body Boot Camp

Location: 3rd Street Dance in West Hollywood

Work-out: Dance Cardio Sculpt Hybrid

Difficulty: Level 5

Next day soreness: 2.5

Duration: 90 min

Sweat Level💦 💦 💦 Drenched

Parking: Metered Street Parking (there is a lot at 3rd Street Dance, but you can’t park in it)

Amenities: Mats, resistance bands and weights provided

Requirements for class: A BIG bottle of water, a towel and a mat if you want to use your own.

JJ Dancer is a professional dancer/celeb fitness trainer and I’ve been wanting to try her class for a while now. Her Bangin’ Body Boot Camp class is only offered every Sunday on Class Pass, and it is 90 minutes of full body intensity. I had doubts about whether or not I was going to last through the class but luckily I made it out alive.

The first half is 45 minutes of non-stop cardio dance. JJ does fast paced dance moves while the rest of the class follows along. You don’t have to do the dance perfectly, but you for sure have to keep moving the whole time. There is a lot of jumping, running, shaking and even leaping.  I definitely underestimated how hard this class was going to be (even though I watched the YouTube video). The class is very, VERY high energy and Jennifer (JJ) keeps you motivated with her spirit and her jokes! The second half of the class is muscle sculpting and toning, and you get a full workout from arms and abs to butt. (You’ve already worked your legs in the cardio portion). Jennifer will definitely whip your butt into shape (some of her clients include Jessica Alba and Jenna Dewan Tatum) and even though I almost died, I’m planning on going back.

AIR Foundation @ AIR Aerial Fitness

Class: AIR Foundation

Location: West Hollywood

Work-out: Aerial

Difficulty: Level 4

Next day soreness: 3.5

Duration: 50min

Sweat Level💦 Moderately Sweaty

Parking: 3rd Street Plaza lot

Amenities: Water/cups, mat provided

Requirements for class: bare feet, tight fitting clothes are preferable

I have been wanting to try AIR after seeing some cool pictures, but have been scared to after a not-so-pleasant aerial yoga experience at Jagged dance studio. Luckily, AIR was SO MUCH BETTER. My instructor was Anna and I thought she was great, but my roommate took AIR Foundation with Whitney the week before and preferred her class. In Anna’s class, she interspersed the workouts between trying different poses. I really enjoyed learning all the cool aerial tricks even though some of them were painful. I also broke a small sweat so it was nice that this is actually a workout (unlike the Jagged class I took).

From what I’ve heard, each class has different poses you can learn, so it won’t be the same from class to class and instructor to instructor. I also really enjoyed the individual help and attention the instructor gave, along with the post-class photo opp that was offered. I will definitely be back after my body heals from the “silk burn,” which can be alleviated somewhat if you come out of poses slowly when possible.

DASH x Cycle House Charity Ride

Processed with VSCOcam with f1 preset

Class: House Ride (40 min.) with Aaron Hines

Location: West Hollywood

Work-out: Cycling

Difficulty: Level 5

Next day soreness: 3

Duration: 40 min (normally 45-55 min.)

Sweat Level💦💦💦 Drenched

Parking: Lot across La Cienega, first 75 min. free ($3 for the charity event)

Amenities: Shower, water fountain, free shoe rentals, apparel for purchase

Requirements for class: Be in the mindset to push yourself.

I came here for the DASHxCHgiveback charity ride to fight cancer (not on ClassPass) and it was PACKED. With Cycle House gaining popularity due to its new reality TV show, Hollywood Cycle, the crowd was a mix of regulars along with many starstruck fans hoping to get a real life taste of what Hollywood Cycle is all about, and a glimpse of a Kardashian. Khloe was there for Nichelle’s class, and nice enough to take selfies with many fans who asked. There was also some cool swag (featured in the pic above), my favorite being the signed copy of the Skinny Confidential and delicious Suja juice.

As far as the class went, those 40 minutes with Aaron really KICKED my butt. I was recovering from a bad cold, so it may have added to the struggle, but it was rough. And if you don’t know, Cycle House’s normal classes range from 45-55 minutes. AND my friend tells me that Aaron went easier on us this class because about half the class was new. I’ve taken classes at CH before with Heather, Mikki and Maranda and none of those were as hard as this class. Maranda’s was still pretty killer. My favorite has been Mikki because she’s encouraging in a non-frightening way and her class was still a good workout. I might add that I’m also not a cardio person so I struggle especially with spin classes. Aaron is all about the cranked up resistance, and sprinting with cranked up resistance, which almost killed me. However, people who are better at cardio than I am tend to love that. If you’re new to Cycle House, I’d recommend taking an easier class and working your way up. Nichelle, Aaron and Nick all have really intense classes, but as they say, “the strength is in the struggle.”

Prevail Los Angeles

Class: Prevail

Location: West Hollywood

Work-out: Boxing/Circuit Training

Difficulty: Level 3.5

Next day soreness: 1.5

Duration: 45 min

Sweat Level💦 Moderately Sweaty

Parking: Street parking

Amenities: Shower, water for purchase, free glove and wrap rental for first class and $5 for each rental after.*

Requirements for class: Wear sneakers, bring water, bring your own gloves and wraps (highly recommended). Also, tightly lace your shoes, wear a tight headband/hair tie and pants that will not fall down since you’ll be doing a lot of jumping and won’t be able to adjust with gloves on.

*The most important thing you will take away from this review is that you should most definitely bring your own gloves and wraps, even if it is your first class. The rental gloves reek of other people’s sweat, and it will stay on your hands after many washes. I learned this the hard way. The gloves and wraps are not expensive; you can make up the cost of renting after attending 5 classes, and believe me, buying your own is well worth not having to cringe at smelling like someone else’s sweat.

Other than that, the class was great. I first discovered Prevail at the Nike Training Club Tour and really liked the workout we did there, since it wasn’t hardcore boxing. Trainer Lo and assistant trainer Erika were good at teaching the newbies the basics, and it was a good way to shake up a regular workout. I will definitely come here again since there was cardio, core and toning all involved in this 45 minute sesh. The clientele isn’t hardcore boxers either. The gym is a favorite of models and high profile bloggers.

Barimicro @ Bari LA Pop Up

Class: Barimicro – Update: as of 2016, it looks like Bari is no longer doing an LA pop-up. However, its Newport location is still on ClassPass.

Location: West Hollywood (Pop up at Hollywood Dance Center)

Work-out: Conditioning Hybrid

Difficulty: Level 3.5

Next day soreness: 2

Duration: 55 min

Sweat Level:💧💧A little dewy

Parking: Free on side streets

Amenities: Resistance band provided for class, but it’s pretty minimal in terms of amenities since it is a pop-up location

Requirements for class: Wear sneakers, bring a mat, water and a towel (optional on the towel)

Contrary to what you might think, this class is not a barre class. It’s more of a hybrid toning/conditioning class that uses a resistance band. Half the class was done standing up and half was done on a folded over yoga mat. The micro class was fine, but I’m really curious to see what their other classes are like – including barimacro and baribounce (which focuses around a trampoline.) Unfortunately, Bari only has permanent studios in NYC and Newport Beach at the moment so it doesn’t look like I’ll be finding out anytime soon.

Jump @ Ballet Bodies

Ballet Bodies

Class: Jump

Location: West Hollywood

Work-out: Trampoline Barre Hybrid

Difficulty: Level 4.5

Next day soreness: 3

Duration: 60 min

Sweat Level: 💦💦Sweaty

Parking: Metered Street

Amenities: Water fountain with cups, shower, ballet merchandise for purchase

Requirements for class: socks and sneakers

This class was hard! Or maybe that’s because I’ve never used a mini trampoline before and the last time I was on a trampoline was the tumble track at a gymnastics center where I badly sprained my ankle and ended my gymnast career before it really even begun. So maybe I have a slight bias towards trampolines, but this class required a lot of coordination.

It started with a floor cardio and stretch warm-up that included dance moves, and then followed by a section of bouncing on mini trampolines using both and one legs all while trying to coordinate hand movements. I was scared of falling off, but I made it. The second half of the class consisted with an arm section using weights, followed by a floor mat cardio session and ending with a few stretches. It was tough, but it was great. I can’t wait to try out the other classes! Also, it doesn’t hurt that Taylor Swift and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley goes here ;).

Pilates @ Xtend Barre

Class: Pilates

Location: West Hollywood – UPDATE: Xtend Barre Weho is now closed as of 2016.

Work-out: Mat Pilates

Difficulty: Level 3.5

Next day soreness: 3

Duration: 60 min

Sweat Level: 💦Moderately Sweaty

Parking: Street Parking, or you can pay $5 to valet with Crossroads and that money can be credited towards your next class or Xtend merchandise

Amenities: Merchandise for purchase

Requirements for class: socks and water

This class pleasantly surprised me after an initially stressful parking situation. The class is right on Melrose, so street parking was difficult but I ended up finding free parking on a side street perpendicular to Melrose (La Jolla, I believe). Amber, the instructor, was very sweet and what I especially liked about this class that differentiates it from other pilates/barre classes was that stretching was incorporated throughout the entire class, and not just at the end. Having been a dancer for 15 years, this really appealed to me.

The workout was also different from a lot of other studios, and the use of a resistance band and a heavy rubber ball was incorporated. I left with my booty on fire, and appreciated Amber taking the time to check in with me, since it was my first class.
